Santo Antao is only a 30 minute fast ferry crossing from Mindelo (1 hour with your car on the larger boat). Rugged terrain and regular rainfall on the far side of the island make for the most spectacular scenery one can imagine.
The jagged mountains with clean deep rifts look like they were only just formed.
Take time out on the road over to Ribeira

Grande to admire the vertical drop down to the impressive extinct volcano.
With over 40,000 permanent residents, there is an established infrastructure with hotels, bars and restaurants to make your stay comfortable. This is a hill walker’s dream with many established tracks and unexplored places. Local guides are friendly and available.

This remote location will probably never appeal to the package tour organisers. This makes it a haven for those seeking space and tranquility for a break, or year round residence.
